PAIN IN A LOWER LIMB THAT COMES FROM YOUR BACK

Sometimes pain that you believe to be originating from your hip, thigh, knee, calf, or foot is actually referred pain from your lower-back region. Referred, or radicular, pain is pain that migrates out from a more central pain source. The most typical leg-pain-referring structures are the lumbar discs and the sciatic nerve (a bundle of spinal nerves which cross under your buttock muscles and run down the back of your leg).

If your daytime leg symptoms are worse when you’re sitting than when standing or walking, this is a strong sign that your back is to blame for your nighttime limb pain. In this case, a visit to a spine specialist–an orthopedist, a manual physical therapist, or a medical doctor whose specialty area is orthopedics–is strongly recommended.
